Job Description Draft

I hate praise.

When I tell people about my work, people usually react surprised, praising my initiative at my young age. Nothing frustrates me more. Being applauded for my accomplishments in the context of my age goes against the philosophy that drives me. I started my company, Studioso, because I saw myself as an intellectual and creative equal to my competitors, regardless of their age. Since then, I worked 60-75 hours a week to build my company from nothing. I pride myself on never having accepted outside capital to fund my company and building everything from inside the company, with our own team.

Although my job has continually evolved since I started the company, one of my roles has never changed. I always directed my team to work together, creatively, and innovatively. At first, my CTO and I were the only employees. As the company gained traction in market interest, investors, and sales, we grew our team to 10 total employees. From Guilherme designing fliers to Luke coding Android, no one person’s skillset was unique. My greatest challenge was making sure that they all worked in sync. The tasks our employees were working on were interdependent. If the development team did not finish in time for a marketing campaign, the campaign would have to be put on hold, effecting the entire company’s performance for a given month, quarter, and even year. To mitigate this risk, I introduced my team members to work-management strategies to increase their individual efficiency and transparency with others. Improving our company’s internal workings to be coordinated and efficient was the accomplishment I am most proud of and the practice that has most advanced the company.

Leading my team was the primary part of my job at Studioso. However, I also undertook a role where I was a sort of jack of all trades. I hired/fired people, built relations with investors, spoke at events, pitch competitions, and panels, designed the website, user interface, fliers, logos, and graphics, and coded the website and part of the app’s back-end. These were just a fraction of my tasks. Being active in all these different aspects of the business taught me how to be versatile and focused. I always had the big picture in mind no matter how menial the task.

Being the jack of all trades in your organziation was a lot of resposibility and by dealing with a heavy work load, I can see how this overall can only build you to success the future. Kudos.

  5. This is really cool and inspiring! One of my friends recently sold a company he started when he was 19, so I really believe anything is possible if you set your mind to it. How has it been balancing school while also working on Studioso and do you see the WBB program changing how you run the company going forward?

  7. I'm actually a musician myself and I have definitely heard of this app, although never used it, in my years of playing and writing. This job description reminded me of BUAD304, where we learned how to deal with conflict among colleagues and how to manage teams among other things. I do think praise to a certain extent is a good thing, but you always need people who will keep you in check and push you further and further in regards to life and your career.
